Romanian prosecutors, in cooperation with the Moldovan authorities, traced a group of criminals with Moldovan, Romanian and dual nationalities, who set up a business to smuggle migrants to Western Europe. The migrants came from African and Asian countries and followed the route Greece – Bulgaria – Romania – Hungary – Austria or Greece – Bulgaria – Serbia, or Croatia – Hungary – Austria, IPN reports, with reference to ziarulcomunitatea.ro.

The group of criminals was annihilated in cooperation with the Moldovan authorities. A number of searches were carried out in both of the countries. In a criminal case concerning the formation of a criminal group, Romanian prosecutors served 11 domiciliary search warrants in Ilfov and Dambovita counties. It was determined that in order to achieve their goals, the members of the criminal group purchased high-capacity vehicles. During the searches, means of communication, documents and other evidence were found. Each person who was illegally transported across the borders paid €3,000 to €5,000.

The quoted source noted that in April 2024, under the aegis of EUROJUST, an agreement was concluded to set up a joint investigation team between the judicial authorities of Romania and the Republic of Moldova in order to document criminal activities involving Moldovan citizens. The first joint action to execute search warrants on the territory of Romania with the participation of representatives of the judicial authorities of the Republic of Moldova, supported by the Southeast European Law Enforcement Center (SELEC), took place two weeks ago.
