A hundred paintings and artifacts that offer a foray into the history and culture of Romania, from prestigious public and private collections, are on display at the National History Museum of Moldova. The artworks illustrate crucial moments and notable figures, from great rulers, such as Stephen the Great or Michael the Brave, to titans of Romanian literature, such as Mihai Eminescu, Ion Creangă and Tudor Arghezi.
The exhibition, funded by the Romanian Government’s Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova, includes sections dedicated to the Romanian royal family , presenting objects and portraits of its members, as well as outstanding contributions of Romanian athletes at international competitions. Among the special exhibits is a portrait of Stephen the Great from the collection of the Neamț National Museum Complex, a portrait by Theodor Aman of Tudor Vladimirescu, as well as personal items of Queen Maria and King Ferdinand.
Adrian Dupu, State Secretary of the Department for Relations with Moldova, noted at the opening event that the exhibition harmoniously combines history and culture, two of the elements that form the basis of the special relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. This brings art lovers a foray into our shared history, said Adrian Dupu.
“Romania's history in 100 portraits brings us closer to kings, queens, politicians, athletes, scholars and intellectuals, and other prominent personalities of Romanian history. The portraits, but also the personal objects, letters or clothing of these personalities who made history help us better understand the course of our becoming and rediscover our history and shared traditions, the values that bind us”, said Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Cristian-Leon Țurcanu.
The exhibition was brought from the National History Museum of Romania and is part of a series of exhibitions presented on this side of the Prut River by Art Safari Bucharest. The event will run until September 15 and admission is free.
