Romanian diplomat to lead EU civilian mission in Moldova

Romanian diplomat Cosmin Dinescu was appointed as head of the EU Partnership Mission in the Republic of Moldova as a result of a selection process managed by the European External Action Service, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania noted in a press release that is quoted by IPN.

On April 24, the Council of the EU established the EU Partnership Mission in the Republic of Moldova (EUPM Moldova) under the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP). The objective of this civilian mission is to enhance the resilience of the security sector of the country in the areas of crisis management and hybrid threats, including cybersecurity, and countering foreign information manipulation and interference. EUPM Moldova will have an initial mandate of two years and its Operational Headquarters will be in Moldova.

The selection of the Romanian diplomat for this post was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, being communicated to the Romanian Affairs Minister of Foreign Bogdan Aurescu.

“We are proud that a mate of ours, a very good professional and an experienced diplomat, will lead the first EU civilian Common Security and Defense Policy mission in the Republic of Moldova, which is designed to support Chisinau in key areas of the concretization of its European course, with emphasis on building of the Republic of Moldova’s resilience and security. The selection of Cosmin Dinescu for this especially important post at EU level confirms the value of Romania’s candidate and the key role of our country in supporting the Republic of Moldova at all levels, primarily on the European path and in the implementation of democratic reforms,” stated Bogdan Aurescu.

Cosmin Dinescu, who currently serves as Romania’s Ambassador to Lithuania and Latvia, competed for this post together with another seven persons. He is a carrier diplomat with 25 years’ experience in the Romanian diplomatic service, both at bilateral and multilateral levels.
