The EU informal summit in Sibiu, held on May 9, was an important event for Europe as a whole, stated Romanian ambassador Daniel Ioniță during a news conference in Chisinau. It’s also important for Moldova, says the diplomat, as it was an occasion to reaffirm the need to act in unity and solidarity to address neighborhood-related matters, among many other issues.

For a Moldova that strives to get closer to the European Union, the upcoming EU parliamentary elections are important to the extent to which the European Parliament is a fundamental institution that “ensures the consistency of legislation and actions”, says the ambassador. Daniel Ioniță also said that the EP would be made up of political groups with a wide representation at European level, with direct ties to Moldovan parties. At the same time, they shape policies that will directly affect the lives of Moldovan citizens.

In a Declaration released at the Sibiu summit, it is noted that in a few weeks Europeans will elect their representatives in the European Parliament, forty years after they first exercised this fundamental right. “A Europe re-united in peace and democracy is but one of many achievements. Since its inception, the European Union, driven by its values and freedoms, has provided stability and prosperity across Europe, within and beyond its borders. Over the years, it has grown into a major player on the international scene. Gathering around half a billion citizens, with a competitive single market, it is a leader in worldwide trade, and shapes global politics”, reads the Declaration.

“We recognise our responsibility as Leaders to make our Union stronger and our future brighter, while recognising the European perspective of other European States”, says the Declaration adopted in Sibiu.
