Romania is interested in the creation of a space of prosperity and security in the region and that countries such as Moldova, Ukraine, and Western Balkans states gain a European perspective as soon as possible. This statement was made by Romania’s Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu during his visit to Portugal, currently holding the EU Presidency. The Romanian official also solicited that these countries’ efforts towards consolidating democratic institutions, turning their economies into market economies according to the European model be supported as well. Speaking about to the Transnistria settlement, Tariceanu explicitly referred to the need for the negotiations to be solved in the 5+2 format, in which the EU would play an important role because the settlement of the Transnistrian crisis will generate supplementary opportunities and advantages for Moldova in its process of getting closer to the EU. “We want to assist the neighboring country on this road which is not at all a simple one and we want the EU to focus more attention to this area, to the Black Sea area and related matters including”, the Romanian Prime Minister underlined.
