In connection with the War Veterans Day that is celebrated on April 29, the Ministry of National Defense of Romania will offer presents to the veterans from the Republic of Moldova, which will be distributed to them before Easter, IPN reports, quoting the Embassy of Romania in Moldova.

In a press release, the Embassy says that those who guarded the country’s borders to defend the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and interests of Romania – the war veterans - are honored on April 29. In connection with this day, Romania’s Ambassador in Chisinau Daniel Ioniță, accompanied by members of the Bureau of the Defense Attaché, staged a commemoration event at the Cemetery of Honor of Romanian Heroes in Micleușeni village of Strășeni district. Daniel Ioniță laid a wreath at the crucifix inside the cemetery, while a group of priests of the Metropolitan Church of Bessarabia held a service to remember the Romanian heroes.

Over 200 Romanian Army soldiers, who were mostly unidentified, were buried in common graves at the Cemetery of Honor of Romanian Heroes in Micleușeni that was inaugurated on July 17, 1941. After the Romanian army withdrew from Bessarabia, the cemetery was destroyed by the Soviet authorities. However, the local Romanian community marked the place of the former cemetery by setting up Christian crosses and a stone block. A crucifix donated by the Association “Ginta Latina“ was placed on the territory of the former cemetery in 2005. The cemetery was reconstructed by the National Office for the Cult of Heroes of Romania and was officially opened on October 25, 2008, on the occasion of the Romanian Army Day.
