Romania faces a shortage of labour force. This is why, in a first stage, the country will facilitate the access on its labour market for the population from neighbouring countries where important Romanian communities live: Moldova, Ukraine and Serbia, Romania’s President Traian Basescu stated during an interview given to the French newspaper “Le Monde”. Basescu also stated that at the same time, the main objective is to make the Romanians who left the county for a job in the EU to come back. According to the Romanian Labour Department, 771 labour authorisations have been issued to Moldovan citizens till September 1, which is 14.5% of the total. According to unofficial data, a much greater number of Moldovans work in Romania, specifically those who hold the citizenship of both states.
