Romania is willing to persuade the EU member countries to include Moldova in the enlargement wave for Western Balkans, President of Romania Traian Basescu told the German newspaper “Frankfurter Rundschau”. Ukraine is not that advanced yet, President of Romania said, mentioning that all the 27 EU members will decide upon the new enlargement wave. Bucharest has several times officially declared that it will support Moldova in the European integration process. Basescu declared this summer that he suggested President Vladimir Voronin to join the EU together with Romania. In turn, Voronin recently declared at the opening ceremony of the Giurgiulesti terminal: “Someone wants to board us on its train and to take us to Europe, to give a different name to our mother language, and to claim our history is not ours.” Romania signed its Europe Agreement on February 1, 1993. In 1995 it came into force and in June 1995 Romania submitted its official application for membership in the EU. In December 1999, at the Helsinki summit, the European leaders decided to start negotiations with Romania. In 2002, the European Council from Copenhagen decided to postpone the integration of Bulgaria and Romania. In 2004, Romania finished negotiations and on April 25 2005, in Luxembourg it signed the Accession Treaty.
