Romania has donated over one million potassium iodide pills to Moldova, following discussions held by Moldovan Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco with her Romanian counterpart Alexandru Rafila.
The tablets will be distributed by the National Agency for Public Health to its territorial subdivisions and subsequently to health centers across the country, on orders from the Commission for Emergencies. Also, the Agency has developed guidelines for how to administer the medicine.
“There is currently no radiological threat. We urge the population to remain calm”, the Ministry of Health said in a press release.
Health care authorities previously stressed that potassium iodide is not a preventive medicine, and must only be taken in the event of a nuclear disaster. Unnecessary administration of this medicine may seriously harm the thyroid gland.
