The Roma community that fled from Ukraine to Chisinau because of the war doesn’t have sufficient professional training and cannot obtain highly-paying jobs. Those who managed to find a job work in the services sector that is more accessible to representatives of the ethnic group, director general of “Tarna Romˮ Association Marin Alla told a new conference.

According to the organizers of the conference, the National Employment Agency, together with “Tarna Romˮ, are staging sessions to form and inform the potential employees from the community. Besides, the Agency offers a list of vacancies requested by Roma refugees from Ukraine. Another important action is the informing of employers about the persons who want to get employed, while the employees are told about the professional duties. Trips are made to the workplace to see if the working conditions are appropriate, stated Marin Alla.

“Tarna Romˮ offers consultancy for identifying the preferences and work skills of the Roma refugees and closely cooperates with local employers so as to reduce discrimination against the ethnic community on the labor market. Marin Alla suggested that the Moldovan employers that have potential and vacant jobs for the Roma refugees should create a possible employment quota so that the Government of the Republic of Moldova envisions particular concessions, including exemption from paying taxes, so that these could create more jobs and employ more Roma people.

Aliona Ciurar, project coordinator at “Tarna Romˮ, which helps the Roma refugees from Ukraine to find a job, said that owing to the cooperation with the National Employment Agency, a number of Roma refugees from Ukraine could become employed. The organization works with Roma people who are in placement centers in Ungheni, Glodeni, Ialoveni, Chisinau, etc. The fact that most of the Ukrainian refugees of Roma ethnicity cannot find a job because they do not have the necessary professional training is the main challenge.
