The Embassy of Germany is organizing a concert in Chisinau's central square on Monday, October 5, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and simultaneously the 19th anniversary of the official reunification of Germany. The show will feature rock bands from Moldova and Germany, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Twenty years after the collapse of the Wall we want to celebrate again, in open air, in the heart of the city, the reunification of Germany, achieved through democracy and peace, to celebrate the unification of Europe, the relationship between Germany and Moldova at a rock music party”, Julia Krummenauer, deputy head of the German diplomatic mission, has told a news conference on Thursday.
The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 and divided Germany into two parts, East and West. It fell on 9 November 1989, representing a first step to the reunification of Germany, which was completed officially on 3 October 1990. This year, 2009, means a lot to Germany also because it marks the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Federal Germany's Constitution, explained Julia Krummenauer.
The stars of the show will be the Moldovan band “Zdob şi Zdub” and the German band “Sportfreunde Stiller”. “It is a very good idea to celebrate this event here in Moldova and combine these two bands in one concert”, said Zdob si Zdub lead Roman Iagupov, adding that his band prepared a surprise for the concert – a song in German.
Besides the concert, the German Embassy will present on Friday, October 2, at the International Free University of Moldova, an exhibition titled “From Peaceful Revolution to German Unity”, a collection of images and texts depicting the historical events that happened 20 years ago.
Germany has a community of approximately 12,000 Moldovans.
