The Republic of Moldova requires special attention as, besides being vulnerable owing to the border with Ukraine and the problems in the supply of electricity, it is confronted by a situation in which a hostile opposition can anytime take a step forward, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola stated in Brussels in an interview with the press of Romania, Poland and Lithuania. The European official also said that she will make an official visit to the Republic of Moldova in a few weeks, IPN reports.

Roberta Metsola noted that together with the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova became extremely vulnerable and the European community’s decision to offer the two countries the EU candidate status is beneficial.

“From my viewpoint, the Republic of Moldova needs special attention not only because it is the most vulnerable one owing to the border with Ukraine but also because it can no longer bank on electricity from Ukraine for evident reasons. It is a situation in which anytime, another hostile opposition can take a step forward and we are very proud of our June 23 decision to grant the EU candidate status to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova,” stated the European official.

Roberta Metsola also said that the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine could benefit from greater concessions than those stipulated in the association agreement. “The extension of roaming could be an issue for discussion,” noted the official.

She also welcomed the speed at which Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova adjusted to the Community acquis in comparison with a normal enlargement process. “Without naming this acceleration, I would say that this is adjustment of our speed to the speed of these countries,” stated Roberta Metsola.
