Students of the Chisinau Lyceum “Spiru Haret” mounted a road safety march entitled “Save children’s lives” and distributed flags with awareness-raising messages on them to motorists. The event is the last of those staged on the occasion of the UN Global Road Safety Week (April 30 – May 7) and was staged in partnership with the National Patrolling Inspectorate, REPEMOL Project and Auomobil Club, IPN reports.

Press officer of the National Patrolling Inspectorate Uliana Catan said the events held this year within the UN Global Road Safety Week were designed to promote children’s safety in road traffic. The drivers were urged to always give way to pedestrians, especially children, because they can also have children waiting for them at home.

An event to heighten pedestrian’s awareness was staged near a dangerous crosswalk in Chisinau at the beginning of this week. Those who crossed the street legally received green candies from the organizers, while those who jaywalked – red candies. During an hour, there were shared out 8 kg of candies, the number of disciplined pedestrians and of undisciplined ones being almost equal.

“Most of the pedestrians hurry or speak on the phone when they cross the street. Even some mothers with children are irresponsible when crossing the street. Our messages were intended mainly for them,” said Virginia Mandalac, project manager at Automobil Club.

According to the National Patrolling Inspectorate, the over 400 road accidents involving children that happened in Moldova last year claimed the lives of 20 children. The motorists who do not give way to pedestrians face a fine of 200 lei and two penalty points.
