The head of the municipal Road Police (PR), Grigore Guzun, asserts that police have many a time requested authorities to toughen punishment for the drivers who infringe road rules and those who drive intoxicated, but the proposed draft is still but an initiative, it being blocked by the bureaucracy at local and governmental levels. According to Guzun, the number of road accidents and victims considerably rose compared to the last year. The main causes of the accidents are speeding, drivers that are not giving priority to pedestrians, and jaywalking. At the same time, accidents at the pedestrian crossings occur because of the lack of the respective marking and road signs, as well as because of the lack of public lights. According to the police, inebriated drivers are placed the last among the causes of accidents, although this cases are largely publicised. At the same time, according to Guzun, the police requested that the Municipal Council of Chisinau approve a Regulation which would allow the enforced evacuation of illegally parked cars which block the traffic. The head of the PR mentioned that, during a year, he tried to promote the examination of the document within the frameworks of the specialised committees, but in the end it wasn’t been put up for discussion. “It has been half a year since we fight for this Regulation to be approved by the Government, but we confront with the same bureaucracy from the ministries of Public Administration, Transport and of Justice”, Guzun specified. 43 road accidents occurred in Chisinau in the first 2 weeks of the year. 8 persons lost their lives, 54 have been injured. At the same time, about 140 drivers have been found driving intoxicated.
