Revoking of NIT’s license will be back on EU negotiation agenda, CReDO

The revoking of TV channel NIT’s license may appear on the agenda of the second round of negotiations for the liberalization of the visa regime with the European Union, considers Sergiu Ostaf, head of Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO). According to Ostaf, the European Commission will undoubtedly monitor how the norms of assuring fundamental liberties of individuals are respected, along with freedom of speech and mass media on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, reports Info-Prim Neo. “NIT is an institution that is rather politically engaged and biased, which proves to be poor quality, unethical and rather toxic journalism”, stated Sergiu Ostaf at a press conference. Meanwhile, the CReDO head believes that NIT, as a TV channel, should be redirected back on track. The BCC should start proceedings and sanction producers, redactors and editors who break the Law, but not the company as a whole. Sergiu Ostaf expressed his conviction that NIT will regain its emission license through a court order, either locally or through the decision of the ECHR, and the impact created around this reformed television may be a factor in assuring the plurality of public opinion. NIT was left without a license on April 5. The Broadcasting Coordination Committee took this decision due to the channel’s disregard of plurality of opinion, after previously the channel received lighter penalties for the same type of infringements.
