45% of the country’s population consider the Russian Federation represents a threat to the Republic of Moldova, according to the survey “Public perceptions of security and defense systems of the Republic of Moldova” that was presented today by the Platform for Security and Defense Initiatives in a news conference at IPN. 21.5% of those polled consider Russia will be able to help Moldova in case of security problems.

Among the most serious threats to Moldova’s security are: the rise in prices – 44.5% of those surveyed mentioned this, corruption – 43.6%, energy crisis – 40.4%, the war in Ukraine – 37.6% and the economic crisis – 37%.

More than half of the respondents said that Moldova’s neutrality status increases national security. 67.3% of those surveyed said that if Russia attacks Moldova, we should try and have a dialogue.

Sociologist Vasile Cantarji, of CBS-Research, said there is no socio-demographic group that would not be afraid of the war in Ukraine, but society continues to be polarized. Almost half of the respondents consider Russia could not attack Moldova, while another half considers it could. “We have many citizens who perceive the Russian Federation as a danger to the Republic of Moldova’s statehood and there are also many citizens who are sure that the Russian Federation is a partner that can help us in case of security issues,” explained the sociologist.

Elena Mârzac, of the Platform for Security and Defense Initiatives, said the survey showed the population has an increased interest in the security and defense issues. “Several fundamental ideas deriving from this survey show changes in society, especially as regards the information space. Most of the people inform themselves from channels that promote the pro-European message. A smaller number of people continue to inform themselves from channels that distribute filo-Russian information, but these anyway have a very powerful public message that influence citizens’ perceptions and this leads to the polarization of society,” stated Elena Mârzac.

The survey was carried out by the Platform for Security and Defense Initiatives in cooperation with the Center of Sociological Investigations and Marketing Research “CBS-Research” (CBS-AXA) in the framework of the project “Combating of disinformation and denial of fake news in the Republic of Moldova”, with financial support from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS). The survey covered a sample of 1,101 persons aged 18 and above.
