Restrictions on advertising of alcoholic products

The advertising of alcoholic products will be partially banned on the radio, TV, print media, the Internet, public transport, etc. This will be permitted only during national events, in specialized stores, on the territory of producing companies, on travel tickets and in planes. Parliament adopted a bill to amend and supplement a number of legal acts on alcohol control in the first reading on July 6, IPN reports.

Under the bill, advertisements for alcohol on radio and TV stations will be permitted after 10pm until 7am. Images with alcoholic products could not be published on the first and last pages of newspapers or magazines. As regards the Internet, advertisements for alcohol will be allowed only on the websites of alcohol producers.

The promotion of alcoholic beverages will be banned at a distance shorter than 200 meters from education institutions, student dorms, medical-sanitary facilities, sports grounds, military units, repair and building sites, etc.

When presenting the bill in Parliament, deputy minister of health Liliana Iasan said the Republic of Moldova is among the countries with the largest consumption of alcohol per adult person – 16.8 liters a year. The standardized rate of mortality from alcohol use in Moldova is of 222 deaths per 100,000 people, which is one of the highest in the world.

Alcohol is the top noxious factor for the health of Moldova’s population. The public medical-sanitary facilities registered over 45,000 people who suffer from alcoholism. Of these, 15% are women. The treatment of a case of alcohol-related psychosis costs 5,800 lei.
