The National Agency for Food Safety announced that on Monday, November 11, restrictions applied after the last African swine fever outbreak in Comrat have been lifted. Thus, all outbreaks registered in domestic pigs have been eliminated, IPN reports with reference to an ANSA press release.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 30 fever outbreaks in Moldova, out of which 26 affected pigs kept in domestic households. As a result, 402 pigs and 13 wild boars were killed. The last outbreak was registered on September 26, in a private farm in Comrat, which had 40 pigs.

ANSA said that between 2016 and 2018, 46 fever outbreaks were registered in the Republic of Moldova, which led to the death of 642 domestic pigs and 20 wild boars.

ANSA warned that the risk of a new outbreak is persistent given that new outbreaks are regularly occurring in neighboring countries. The specialists recommended not to use culinary residues in order to feed the pigs. Additionally, it is recommended not to buy pork products from neighboring countries, because the products will be confiscated and destroyed at the border.

African fever is not dangerous to humans, however, it quickly spreads among pigs. If the virus is confirmed, the animals are slaughtered in order to prevent the spread of the disease.
