The General Division of Education, Youth and Sport requested the Chisinau Municipal Council and the municipal Social Support Fund to increase the allowance offered to children from socially deprived families at the beginning of the school year.
Nina Butucea, managing specialist at the Division, said that the allowance is now 600 lei and they asked raising it to 1,000 lei, IPN reports. The allowance is provided for purchasing clothes (uniforms) and school supplies whose price grows constantly. “600 lei is not enough for buying all the things needed by a child at school,” she stated.
The Division’s deputy head Zinaida Popescu said that besides this rise, they also asked modifying the mechanism for issuing this benefit so that the allowances in the case of irresponsible parents who drink alcohol is taken by teachers, for example the class master, who can purchase all the necessary things.
A number of 8,000 children received such allowances for the 2013-2014 school year.
