A group of inhabitants of Ulmu village of Ialoveni district announced they will boycott the June 14 local elections because Grigore Postica, who has served as mayor of the village since 2011, was removed from the electoral race. In a news conference at IPN, these said the decision to exclude Postica was intentionally taken right before the elections so that no other person representing the Liberal Democratic Party could run instead of him.
Viorica Budeanu, who lives in Ulmu and is running for the post of local councilor, said Grigore Postica was excluded from the race because he really struggled to protect the state property and the security of the villagers. More exactly, he refused to issue authorizations for building several ponds to breed fish near the local lake that is over 100 ha in area as the people would have remained without pastures, while the lake’s levee could have burst and flooded Ulmu and several other villages situated nearby.
Ulmu resident Nicolae Munteanu said the lake was leased out to a company, which afterward illegally obtained the plot located near the lake, which is over 5 ha in area and on which it intends to build several ponds. As the mayor refused to issue construction authorizations, the company went to court and won all the cases. Now Grigore Postica has to pay fines of over 100,000 lei for non-implementation of court decisions. He was banned from holding particular posts for a period of two years.
Resident Elena Munteanu said the court decision became known in March and at the star of April the villagers staged a meeting where they decided they will anyway support Postica. It is strange why the district electoral council accepted to register Grigore Postica as an election runner at a time when the court decision was known. The people hope the decision taken at the general assembly of villagers was taken into account.
Villager Ecaterina Frunza said the people are indignant at such a situation and will not take part in elections on June 14. By boycotting the elections, the villagers want new elections to be held in Ulmu. By then, the Supreme Court of Justice would have reexamined Grigore Postica’s appeal and could rule in his favor so that he can register as a candidate in the new elections.
Grigore Postica in 2011 won the elections by over 700 votes of the about 1,200 voters of the village.
