The inhabitants of Sangera town and Dobruja and Revaca villages of Chisinau municipality intend to mount a new protest on May 28. In a news conference at IPN, representatives of these said the Ministry of Environment’s letter saying the construction of the hazardous waste management center near Sangera was canceled is not a real guarantee that this initiative will not be restored.

Local councilor of Sangera Valeriu Popa said the central authorities can any time return to the planned activity, even if they now say the project was abandoned. “The letter does not provide guarantees that the hazardous waste management center will not be built in our town during the next few years. We demand that all the documents issued in this regard should be annulled,” stated Valeriu Popa.

According to Ion Duca, local councilor of Sangera, if the hazardous waste management center is built, the residents of the three communities will resort to civil disobedience. “The construction of this center poses dangers to us and to the future of our children. We will oppose this activity until we use up all the possibilities,” he stated.

“We have to take to the streets and to defend our rights. There are many problems in Sangera and the erecting of this center will create even more problems and will damage our environment,” said Alexandr Danu, an inhabitant of Sangera town.

The protest was set to be mounted at the entrance to Sangera at 4pm. The inhabitants of the three communities also protested against the construction of the hazardous waste management center on May 21.
