The inhabitants of Chisinau went to polling places and choose the mayor of Chisinau according to geopolitical criteria. The voter turnout wasn’t much higher than in the first round of the mayoral elections because the voters didn’t have a big choice, editorialist Nicolae Negru stated in post-electoral debates on Moldova 1 TV channel, IPN reports.

According to Nicolae Negru, the election of the mayor according to geopolitical criteria is not a novelty for Chisinau. In the previous elections, the situation was much the same. Asked who he voted for, the editorialist said he voted for a candidate who will not remove the flag of the European Union from the City Hall when this takes up his duties and many other voters were guided by the same belief.

Analyst Ion Tabarta said the voting was based on geopolitical criteria. Even if the programs of the two candidates were good, these didn’t have resonance.

Jurist Pavel Midrigan said any election is crucial and, no matter who the winner is, the voters went to the polling place with hope as a lot of problems accumulated in the city. He called on the citizens not to accept a mayor who does not deliver on his promises, does not obey the law and does not act in the interests of the citizens.

Head of the Election Observation Mission of Promo-LEX Association Pavel Postica said the participation in elections is very important. By this exercise, all the candidates should understand that the voters decide and they, the elected candidates, are those who represent us, the voters.

Pavel Postica also said that among the most frequent violations in the two rounds of voting was the accuracy of the electoral registers. In the runoffs, there were fewer notifications as to the correctness of the rolls, but there were reported more cases of photographing of ballots.

After over 58% of the votes were counted by 10pm, the candidate for mayor of Chisinau of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase polled 51.9% of the vote, while his rival Ion Ceban, of the Party of Socialists, 48.1%.
