The General Inspectorate for Emergencies warns about the risk of falling under the thin ice of rivers, ponds and lakes in Moldova following the formation of ice bridges during the cold snap, IPN reports.

The people are urged to avoid fishing or walking on ice as the layer of ice is at most 8 -10 cm thick. For walking on ice to be safe, air temperatures during several consecutive days should be negative. The oscillation of temperatures leads to the formation of ice bridges, but these are not rigid and pose a threat to those who walk on ice or go skating or fishing.

The persons looking after children are asked to supervise them strictly and not to allow them to walk near water. In situations of risk, the people can seek help on 112 Service.

The State Hydrometeorological Service issued a yellow code advisory for a cold snap all over Moldova during January 16-19. The temperatures are expected to plummet to -15°C.
