A recently published Freedom House report states that the Republic of Moldova is still a “partially free” country in politic and respect of fundamental human rights points of view.
From the former soviet republics, Armenia, Georgia and Kirgizstan were also rated as “partially free”.
The Baltic countries have been ranked as fully independent, as well as, rather surprisingly, Ukraine.
Azerbaijan, Russia and Belarus are on the list of countries lacking freedom.
The most difficult situation in terms of personal freedom are in another 2 former soviet countries, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, that share the bottom positions with Burma, Cuba, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria.
Freedom House expressed its concerns regarding the status of two regions, Chechnya and Tibet, in which the civil population is repressed.
The 2006 annual report analyzes the situation in 192 countries. The document ranks the countries as “free”, “partially free” and “not free”.
Freedom House is an independent non-governmental organization from the USA. It has been created more than 60 years ago by Eleanor Roosevelt, Wendell Willkie and other Americans concerned with increasing threat to democracy and peace in the world.
Freedom House creates annual reports that have become well known through the whole world: „World freedom”, “Mass media freedom”, „Nations in transition” and „Countries at crossroads”.
