Although virtually everyone recognizes corruption to be a major problem, the willingness of the public to cooperate with anti-corruption agencies and get involved in preventing corruption seems to be low, say the police. In a bid to change this, the General Police Inspectorate has launched, through its Directorate for Corruption Prevention, an awareness-raising campaign titled “Report or you will be reported!”

The campaign seeks to raise awareness among the police and the public alike of the need to adopt a morally upright behavior. “With this campaign, we aim to inform people, including drivers, about existing procedures and mechanisms for preventing and reporting corruption. At the same time, integrity messages will be promoted by conducting workshops (...) among police officers”, reads a press release.

Statistics show that police officers are willing to report acts of corruption. During the 11 months of this year, 49 reports of attempted bribery were filed by police officers, leading to 31 criminal cases against the citizens involved.

Bribe taking goes hand in hand with bribe giving, and both are crimes, the Inspectorate points out. The police reaffirm their zero tolerance to corruption among their own staff and call on members of the public to take a stand against corruption by reporting it to the Police by calling 068999902.

Established by the United Nations and marked on December 9, the International Anticorruption Day has been an annual observance in Moldova since 2003.
