Journalists from all over the country are invited to take part in a contest themed “Equal chances of survival for everyone” in order to increase the access of parents with children aged 0-5 to information about the risks of children being injured at home and in road accidents, and to information about the methods of preventing their injuring. The contest is organized by the REPEMOL Project “Regionalization of Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Services”, within the national communication campaign “A danger-free home for your child”.
REPEMOL project coordinator Silvia Morgoci has told Info-Prim Neo that according to official data, a child aged between 0 and 5 dies practically weekly as a result of home accidents. The causes include scalding with hot water, falling off the balcony, crushing under the table, drowning in the bathtub, choking, biting by dogs and others. 80% of the children admitted to the Burns Section of the National Children’s Hospital “Emilian Cotaga” were in a serious condition as they were scalded with hot tea from a cup left on the edge of the table.
”These children could have lived if the danger had been avoided by the adults. We call on the journalists to make a contribution to reducing the death rate among children aged 0-5,” said Silvia Morgoci. “If a journalist not only reported on an accident involving children but also thought to write how these accidents can be avoided, the article would surely have an impact. The families must be helped to know these dangers and how to prevent them.”
The journalists can apply to the following sections: “Print Media”, “Audio”, and “Video”. By three prizes will be offered at each section, of 2,000 to 4,000 lei. There will be also awarded the Special Prize “The Most Active Journalist” of the campaign “A danger-free home for your child” to the value of 5,000 lei, offered by the Swiss Development Cooperation Agency, which finances the REPEMOL Project.
