Parliament voted amendments to the Law on the Regime of Stay for Foreigners in Moldova in the first reading on July 5. The debates on the bill were interrupted in the July 4 sitting after the Communist MPs blocked the Parliament’s rostrum. Under the bill, internal checkpoints will be set up on the Nistru. According to bill authors, this will facilitate the registration of foreigners who enter Moldova via the Transnistrian region, IPN reports.
“The foreigners who enter Moldova must register at the Migration and Asylum Bureau or an office of the state-run company “Registru” within 72 hours. The new mechanism facilitates the registration procedure. The foreigners will register at the internal checkpoints and will not need to go somewhere else,” explained Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean. He specified that the foreigners have the right to chose whether to register at these checkpoints, the Migration and Asylum Bureau or at “Registru”.
The fine for non-registration is 200 to 400 lei.
The date when the six internal checkpoints will start work will be set later.
The Communist MPs accused the parliamentary majority of wanting to create a border on the Nistru River.
