The modification of the political course by the Democratic Party is treated differently by political commentators.  Some consider that by declaring the pro-Moldova orientation, the party partially abandons the European integration idea. Others say the European course of the Republic of Moldova will not be affected.

Political commentator Vitalie Andrievski said the pro-Moldova course promoted by the Party of Socialists is different from that of the Democrats. The PSRM focuses on the idea of Moldovan language, the support for the church, the fight against homosexuality. “This is the pro-Moldova policy pursued by Igor Dodon. He wants such a Moldova. Vladimir Plahotniuc has another view that includes good roads, higher pensions and salaries, water supply systems in villages. This is the difference between the perceptions of pro-Moldova,” he stated, noting that even if the PDM orients itself to a pro-Moldova program, it didn’t give up the European integration plans  and changed only the tactical approaches.

Andrei Popov, president of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives, said the leaders of the Democratic Party speak about the European integration in tangible terms, such as pensions, salaries and kindergartens. But Europe means first of all values, free courts of law, free press and lack of corruption. “The PDM juggles a lot: yesterday they said they will support only a pro-European candidate in the presidential elections and in the mayoral elections and announced plans to enshrine the European course in the Constitution; now they accuse others of speaking too much about the European integration,” stated Andrei Popov. According to him, this shows that the PDM is not an ideological party and it is very easy for it to maneuver things form tactical viewpoint.

On September 14, the Democratic Party announced it will be a “pro-Moldova” party and will act in the interests of all the Moldovans with an agenda that will center on people’s problems.
