The referendum on neutrality will take place, now or later, said the head of the Moldova Platform Irina Vlah. According to her, this very important issue should be decided by the people, not by President Maia Sandu and her party.

In a press briefing hosted by IPN, Irina Vlah said that, according to the principles of neutrality, the country should not get involved in the conflict between other states and in peacetime should not join military alliances. “Why do you, the government, think you have the right to decide such an important issue for the people?!”, asked the leader of the Moldova Platform.

According to her, those who are at the forefront of Moldova’s foreign policy have doubts about neutrality. For this reason, the Moldova Platform proposed that an additional question be included in the referendum that President Maia Sandu wants to organize simultaneously with the presidential election – on the neutral status of the Republic of Moldova. However, the authorities ignore the request and do not want to hear the people’s opinion on the issue of neutrality, which can engage the country in dangerous scenarios.

“We assume the mission to monitor and signal any deviation of the government from the principle of neutrality. We will not allow the Republic of Moldova to be involved into scenarios that run counter to the interests of the country and its citizens, while the neutrality referendum will take place anyway, now or later, because the people must take a decision on this issue of utmost importance, not Maia Sandu and those from her party,” noted Irina Vlah.
