The Governor of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal proposed holding a local referendum on the foreign policy of Moldova. The Governor’s press service has told IPN that such a decision was made on October 1.

Under the document, the following question will be put in the referendum: “What future foreign development course of Moldova do you support?”. There are given three answers out of which the participants in the plebiscite must choose one: Moldova should join the European Union; Moldova should join the Customs Union, and Moldova should remain a neutral state and develop simultaneously friendship relations with countries from both of the unions.

The authors of the initiative make reference to a series of articles of Moldova’s Law on the Special Legal Status of Gagauzia, the Constitution of Gagauzia and Gagauzia’s Law on Referendum.

Under the legislation of Moldova, the foreign policy is a prerogative of the central authorities.

The Governor’s decision was sent to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, which will take a final decision on the matter.
