A new round of negotiations on the formation of a parliamentary majority was held. The leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), the Democratic Party (PDM) and the Liberal Party (PL) decided that a referendum to amend the Constitution’s provisions concerning the election of the head of state will be staged in autumn. The politicians also said that the agreement on the formation of the government coalition will be signed tomorrow or the day after tomorrow (July 17 or 18), IPN reports.

The leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat told the journalists that the negotiations are close to an end and the agreement on the formation of the governing alliance, with all the necessary elements, including concerning the functioning of the parliamentary majority and the election of the head of state, will be signed by this weekend. A referendum to amend the Constitution will be held in autumn so that the head of state is elected by three steps: by 61 votes, by 57 votes by the second attempt and by 51 votes by the third attempt.

The chairman of the PDM Marian Lupu said with satisfaction that the politicians managed to advance at today’s round. “Things show that we follow an appropriate path and the time limit we set for signing the accord and investing the new Government will most probably be respected. We discuss all the elements concerning the government mechanism and common responsibility. I’m glad that all the participants are making effort to overcome the frustrations from the past. We have yet a lot to do,” he stated, adding that everyone accepted to start the negotiations on the distribution of ministries from zero.

The PL’s leader Mihai Ghimpu said the talks went well. “We hope the agreement will be signed tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. The distribution of ministries was discussed superficially. I think the agreement will be finalized today and we will see afterward. The number of ministries that the parties will control will depend on the number of votes they gained. The issue of the appointment of the prosecutor general was discussed insufficiently. We are yet to consult the European partners,” he stated.

The negotiations between the three parties started at end-June. They PLDM, PDM and PL aim to install the new Government by the end of July.
