“These are fully erroneous and disproportionate,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Teodor Melescanu stated, commenting on Moldovan President Igor Dodon’s assertions that the unionist statements adopted by mayor’s offices in Moldova mean civil war.

After a meeting with his Moldovan counterpart Tudor Ulianovschi in Bucharest, Teodor Melescanu said the statements about the union with Romania made at the local level are just the expression of the wish of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to come closer to those of Romania and these have no legal implications. “Therefore, I think the references to a civil war are evidently fully erroneous and disproportionate,” said Minister Melescanu.

The Romanian official underlined how important the bilateral relationship with Moldova is for Romania, especially because the centenary of the union of 1918 is to be celebrated this year. Teodor Melescanu wished Tudor Ulianovschi, who was recently appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova, success in his work that this year will take place under particular auspices, referring to the parliamentary elections.

For his part, Minister Ulianovschi thanked the Romanian authorities for the constant assistance offered to Moldova in its European integration efforts and in more practical matters, such as the renovation of kindergartens and national heritage sites. He noted that Romania is the key commercial partner of Moldova and one of the most important investors.

In connection with the promotion of the European agenda, Minister Melescanu assured his Moldovan counterpart that Romania will continue to cooperate with its European partners, especially France, in organizing the upcoming meeting of the Group for the European Action of the Republic of Moldova.

Also, Minister Ulianovschi announced the organization in Chisinau in a predictable future of a new joint meeting of the Moldovan and Romanian Governments as a strategic instrument of the bilateral cooperation.
