The Council of Rectors of the Republic of Moldova called on the Ministry of Education to annul the order on admission to the State University of Moldova (USM) on budget-funded places. The rectors say the administration of the USM attracted candidates to studies by deviating from the regulations on the organization of admission. The University’s managers deny the accusations, IPN reports.

According to the Council of Rectors, during the first part of the admission period, the administration of the USM made promises to attract students and the other universities were thus put in unequal conditions. Before July 24, when the university admission campaign started, the University’s managers sent email messages about admission to studies to candidates.

In the morning of the last submissions day of the first admission stage, July 31, all the applicants to studies were issued with messages informing them that they were admitted and that they should immediately submit the documents in the original. On August 1, the institution published the order on admission on budget-funded places that included 660 persons. These persons thus withdrew their documents from the other universities. By another order, of August 5, another 373 persons were admitted to the first year of studies without paying tuition for the first year.

The Council of Rectors’ president Grigore Bolestecinic, who is the rector of the Academy of Economic Studies, has told IPN that the USM admitted students on budget-funded places at the most popular faculties, such as economy and law, while the rest of the higher education establishments remained without candidates at these specialties.

Contacted by IPN, pro-rector for teaching activity at the USM Otilia Dandara said the University’s administration denies the accusations that it started admission earlier. The USM was allotted 750 budget-funded places and only 660 of these were filled. The rest are to be filled during the second admission stage. While other institutions do repair works with the money earned by themselves, the USM decided to use this money to finance the studies of 373 students who had high grades, but could not get a budget-funded place owing to the stiff competition.
