The number of those that would vote for Moldova’s accession to the EU has reached a record level, the Public Opinion Barometer shows. On the other hand, according to the same survey, the population now trust NATO the least. If a referendum was held next Sunday, 76.2% of the population would vote in favour of joining the EU, while 8% would vote against. The supporters of the accession to the EU in the previous Barometers made up between 56% and 72%. About 72% of the respondents believe that their life would improve when Moldova joins the EU, while 13% consider the opposite. Some 8% think that their life would be the same. Over 44% of those questioned consider that Romania is the country that can offer Moldova the greatest support in the accession process, while each fifth said this about Russia. Only 1% of the respondents consider that Moldova can do it by itself. If a referendum was held next Sunday, only 23.4% of the respondents would vote for joining NATO. The percentage of the NATO supporters in the previous Barometers was between 26% and 37%. Some 41% would vote against. This is twofold less compared with the previous polls. Most of the Moldovans back the idea of participating in international peacekeeping operations under the aegis of the EU – over 40%. The EU is followed by the UN – 36.5%, OSCE – 30.0%, and NATO – only 24%. Over 60% of the respondents said that the status of neutrality is the best solution for ensuring Moldova’s security, while 20% said that the best solution is to join NATO.
