The Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections and Promo-LEX Association will analyze the law on the switchover to the joint electoral system and, if they identify irregularities, will inform the European Platform for Democratic Elections.
“We asked President Nicolae Timofti not to promulgate the law, but it seems that we weren’t heard. We will inform the international community, and the international organizations and partners. In the European countries, something like this does not happen. The electoral system is not changed in 3-4 days,” the Coalition’s secretary Nicolae Panfil has told IPN.
Promo-LEX program director Pavel Postica said that the law hasn’t been yet published in the Official Gazette and could not be found elsewhere. “When we examine the law, we will be able to verify its constitutionality. If it turns out that the law is constitutional, we will take steps to improve it,“ he stated.
The law on the switchover to the joint electoral system was promulgated by President Nicolae Timofti on April 22, after it was endorsed by the relevant parliamentary commission and passed by Parliament in two readings in three days. Earlier, the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections and Promo-LEX Association expressed their concerns about the hasty adoption of the bill and asked that the authorities hold public debates on the document.
