A Prosecutor General’s Office-led task force has conducted a series of raids today at various Customs Service and Moldova Mail locations in the case of the alleged large-scale, transborder schemes of trafficking in anabolic drugs, amber, tobacco products and alcohol.

The PGO said in a press release that evidence has been seized confirming smuggling postal deliveries through the Chisinau Airport. Other objects seized include digital storage devices containing incriminating postal processing information.

The investigation was started in late June, after Sorin Stati, former director of the Civil Aviation Authority MoldATSA, told investigative reporters that each week Moldova was being transited by two tonnes of smuggled amber on its way from Ukraine to Hong Kong. He alleged that high-ranking officers from the Police, the Customs Service and the Chisinau Airport were implicated in the scheme.
