Moldova’s best tennis player Radu Albot lost a match from the first round after qualifying for the final of the U.S. Open. So far Moldova wasn’t represented at a Grand Slam tournament. Radu Albot was beaten by Gilles Simon of France, IPN reports.
Albot achieved the best result in the history of the Moldovan tennis after going through three qualifying rounds to the final of the U.S. Open. But he lost the game against Gilles Simon 3-6, 4-6, 2-6 in the first round. Albot won 9 games against a much more experienced player. After the match Gilles Simon said the game exhausted him.
As a result of this competition, Radu Albot won 35 points in the ATP rankings. He will thus be among the best 200 players of the world. He also won US$35,754.
Radu Albot will play as part of the national squad of Moldova in the Davis Cup, where he will make effort to qualify for the Europe/Arica Zone First Group for the first time. The final against Denmark will take place on September 12, 13 and 14.
