Radio Moldova to hold Doina Festival

Radio Moldova will organize the Doina Festival, a contest of both instrumental and vocal performances of the traditional Romanian type of music. The deadline for candidates’ registration is October 24. Both amateurs and professionals are welcome to join the contest. Radio Moldova director Alexandru Dorogan told Info-Prim Neo that this will be the first edition of the Doina Festival, but the organizers hope it will become a tradition. “Doina is on the verge of extinction and the festival is meant to bring new life into this music. We have a duty to revive the doina”, said Alexandru Dorogan. So far, 60 candidates applied for participation. The selection will take place on October 25 and 26 at the Radio House. Participants will perform either doinas or doina-style songs without instrumental accompaniment. The contest itself will take place on October 27 and the Gala on October 28, at 6 PM, at the Radio House, and it will be broadcasted live. The Gala will be preceded by a scientific conference of musicologists and other experts in the field. The main award, the festival trophy, will be 10,000 lei. The first place winner will receive 7000 lei, the second place 5000 and the third place 3000. The sponsors will hand additional awards for the most authentic doina, for best vocal and instrumental improvisation, for the youngest and the oldest participant and for the most authentic folk costume.
