The quality of the Romanian language increased considerably after the declaration of Independence, but there are yet a lot of difficulties. The people started to realize the necessity of speaking and writing correctly and this is important and everyone does it within their possibilities, considers Irina Condrea, professor of the Language Faculty, and Constantin Schiopu, Doctor Habilitate, lecturer at the State University of Moldova, IPN reports.

Irina Condrea said the evolution of the Romanian language in general is good compared with the developments before 1989, when there was complete confusion and the people could not express themselves in the Romanian language. After 1989, the people started to follow another pace and things at institutional level, where the literary Romanian language must be used, returned to normality.

There are yet difficulties, but the young generation speaks Romanian much better, stated Irina Condrea. The people read and write more than 25 years ago. The language has always developed. There are more difficult aspects such as the orthographic rules that permanently adjust.

According to Constantin Schiopu, knowledge of the Romanian language and the way of expressing in it have definitely improved after the 1990s. There are many young people who try to have Romanian pronunciation and express themselves in a more literary way. “What concerns me is the fact that the young people and other age categories follow the fashion. When I say fashion, I mean Englezisms and particular words that are used mistakenly,” he stated.

As regards grammar, a lot is yet to be learned. “When I say grammar, I mean the agreement between article and substantive, between subject and predicative, relative pronoun and substantive, demonstrative identity pronoun. Things stand not well here and we have yet a lot to work,” stated the lecturer.

He also said the fact that the Romanian language is not known and is not written correctly is a problem that derives from school. Thus, the conception concerning the teaching of the Romanian language and literature should be modified and reading should be promoted so as to obtain correct methods of expression.
