The quality of the water of the Byk River becomes worse every year. Nine cases of pollution have been recorded since the start of the year, as against one case in 2000. The data were presented by the head of the State Hydrometeorology Service’s Integrated Ecological Monitoring Center Lidia Cozari in a roundtable meeting themed “We are for a clean Byk” on December 17, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Any pond and any green area must be a center of attraction for the population. The situation in our country is different,” said deputy mayor of Chisinau Nistor Grozavu. In the same connection, the head of the Chisinau Local Organization of the Ecological Movement of Moldova Vladimir Caraba said that the Byk does not exist anymore.
The construction of treatment stations in the settlements through which the river goes would be a solution for cleaning the Byk, considers Alexandru Vishnevski, the head of the Chisinau Wastewater Treatment Station.
Chief inspector of the Anenii Noi Ecological Inspectorate Eugen Salcutan said the villages can obtain support from the National Ecological Fund for building treatment stations only after carrying out the designing works. But these works cost several hundreds of thousands of lei and the settlements do not have such money. Thus, most of the proposed solutions cannot be implemented.
Most of the participants in the meeting agreed that the pollution of the Byk will remain a problem until there is poverty in Moldova. It was stressed that the public-private partnership are insufficiently promoted and stimulated.
The Byk River is a branch of the Nistru. The roundtable meeting was organized by the Chisinau Local Organization of the Ecological Movement of Moldova.
