The Ecologist Green Party (PVE) of Moldova asks President Maia Sandu to constitute a consultative council on ecological security problems, environmental protection and climate change that will suggest solutions to ensure the realization of the constitutional right of each citizen to a healthy environment, will implement environmental provisions from the Moldova – EU Association Agreement and will promote the development principles according to the European Green Deal, IPN reports.

In a statement, the PVE says that together with the replacement of the administration, the authorities’ irresponsible attitude to the protection of the environment does not change.

“During the last two decades, the central and local authorities of the Republic of Moldova only mimicked their concern about the state of the environment. According to the latest studies in the field, the state of the environment in the Republic of Moldova is disastrous and is considered a major problem of our society, which can affect the sustainable future of the next generations. Corruption, indifference, incompetence of the authorities are responsible for the fact that we have few forests, feel the drastic shortage of drinking water and water for irrigation, have a lot of waste, while the soil is no longer as fertile as earlier. In such conditions, the negligent attitude and inaction on the part of the senior administration can shortly lead to an ecological catastrophe, followed by genocide,” runs the statement.

The PVE noted that the European Union approved the European Green Deal that is to become the new growth strategy of the EU, according to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Also, the EU in 2019 identified five post-2020 deliverables for the Eastern Partnership that includes Moldova. One of them is environmental and climate resilience.

The party also demands that the Moldovan government should include the ecological security as a top priority in the negotiations on the EU’s Multiannual Indicative Program for 2021 – 2027 for Moldova, to immediately launch a national program for the ecological rehabilitation of small rivers for 2021- 2030 and to institute a moratorium on any felling for a five-year period.
