The President of Russia Vladimir Putin said the Republic of Moldova is an important partner in the region for the Russian Federation, but the bilateral relations have regrettably developed not in the best way in the recent past. This is confirmed by the volume of trade that has almost halved during the last few years. The statements were made at the beginning of a meeting with the President of Moldova Igor Dodon, who is in Moscow on a visit, IPN reports, quoting the official website of the Russian presidential administration.

“I hope very much that your first visit to the Russian Federation will be a stimulus to develop the relations between our states in all directions,” said Vladimir Putin.

Igor Dodon said he is sure that a new period starts in the bilateral relations. “Last year, the Moldovan people voted the President and the President’s program. Most of the people voted for keeping the statehood, the neutrality, the strategic partnership with Russia, for settling the Transnistrian conflict, for keeping the traditional Orthodox values. We also hope and the Moldovan people hope that a new stage will start in 2017 and we will be able to restore the strategic partnership in key areas,” stated the President.

Igor Dodon also said that this is the first official visit to Russia by a President of Moldova since 2008. Therefore, most of the people expect with hope that the accumulated problems will be solved.
