The President of Russia Vladimir Putin instructed the Federation Council to examine the possibility of simplifying the procedure for providing Russian nationality to the inhabitants of the Transnistrian region. The announcement was made by the chairman of the Federation Council’s Committee on Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev in a meeting with officials of the Transnistrian administration, IPN reports, quoting the publication of the Federal Assembly of Russia.

The Russian senator said they work on the matter and expressed his confidence that progress will be soon made in this regard. For their part, the Transnistrian leaders said that despite the EU’s economic development proposals intended for the region, especially those formulated by Germany, Transnistria’s development course will always be aimed at the Russian Federation.

In the meeting, it was mentioned that 213,000 Russian citizens live in Transnistria, which has a population of half a million.
