The public health emergency instituted until June 30 will most probably be extended for another month. A decision to this effect will be taken by the National Extraordinary Commission for Public Health on June 23, IPN reports.

After the ordinary meeting of senior state officials, Prime Minister Ion Chicu said the epidemiological situation determined by COVID-19 last week followed a negative trend in Moldova and in the world. The rise in the number of infections is due to the resumption of economic activities. They had discussions with health specialists and these said that they will propose extending the public health emergency for a month.

The official noted it is important that the healthcare system could cope with this jump in the number of new cases. As regards the places available in hospitals, additional beds were prepared last week. The beds are now 50-55% occupied. The medical personnel are exhausted and this is a problem. The population should show responsibility during the pandemic.

As many as 14,200 infections with the novel coronavirus have been confirmed in Moldova by June 21. More than 2,000 cases of infection are among employees of the healthcare system. The death toll from COVID-19 stands at 473.
