The Customs Service in cooperation with the Prosecutor General's Office (PG) and the competent authorities of Belgium and Russia managed to annihilate an international network that smuggled psychotropic substances. Prosecutor Roman Eremciuc told a news conference on Thursday that the drugs were to be transported along the Brussels-Chisinau-Moscow route, Moldova being a transit country, Info-Prim Neo reports.
PG division head Viorel Morari said the Customs Service and the Prosecutor General's Office opened an inquiry after they received a notification last July. “We tapped phones, identified the contact persons from Belgium and Russia, determined the date when the contraband was to get to Chisinau and searched the home of the suspect from Chisinau. There were found 4,000 pills containing psychotropic substances and 467 Ecstasy pills,” said Viorel Morari. The market value of the drugs is €125,000.
Oleg Bucataru, head of the Customs Service's Antidrug Division, said they launched a joint investigation with Russia's Federal Security Service and the Antidrug Department of Belgium. “Legal cases were opened against four persons in Russia. Supposedly, the group consists of ten persons,” said Oleg Bucataru.
The suspect arrested in Chisinau is a Moldovan national. He faces 3 to 10 years in jail.
