The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) asked the administration of Romania to provide official apologies and to condemn the statements made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Bogdan Aurescu and Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Daniel Ioniță, about the Moldovan identity and Moldovan language. In a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, Bogdan Aurescu asked Ukraine to recognize the inexistence of the Moldova language, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the party.

According to the Socialists, this is not by far the first offensive statement made by Romanian officials. “We remind that no long ago, Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Daniel Ioniță dared to make an impertinent statement about the supporters of the Moldovan identity. As we see, the statements of Misters Aurescu and Ioniță are not private opinions of persons, but show the clear direction of Romania’s foreign policy aimed at suppressing the national identity of the Moldovan nation”.

The PSRM says such statements are hostile and offensive to the Moldovan people and language. “We remind that the ethnonym “Moldovan language” and glossonym “Moldovan language” appeared several centuries earlier than the definitions “Romanian people” and “Romanian language”, noted the party.

According to the PSRM, by such statements, the official representatives of Romania show the real face of the official Bucharest. Such assertions, alongside the scandalous Chauvinist actions of the AUR movement and other unionist forces in Moldova point to the long-term strategy for absorbing the independent Republic of Moldova.

“We call on the foreign officials and diplomats accredited to Moldova to show respect for our country, our nation, our language and history,” runs the PSRM’s press release.
