The MPs of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) propose adding provisions on the elections in ATU Gagauzia to the Electoral Code. The provisions refer to the organization and holding of elections to the People’s Assembly and to choose the Governor (Bashkan) of Gagauzia. A bill to this effect was registered with the Parliament’s Secretariat, IPN reports.

Under the Socialists’ proposal, the Central Election Commission of Gagauzia will work on a permanent basis as a legal entity, with its own budget, treasury accounts and stamp with the symbol of ATU Gagauzia. “In the limits of its powers, the Central Election Commission of Gagauzia works independently from the Central Election Commission, the local public administration and other state authorities,” says the bill.

The Socialists also propose that the Electoral Code should stipulate that in case of the aforementioned elections, the CEC after the elections will transmit data from the State Register of Voters, which is need for compiling the voter rolls of Gagauzia, to the local Central Election Commission.

“It should be noted that the Election Code does not specify the powers of the bodies of ATU Gagauzia, the procedure for electing the People’s Assembly and the Governor (Bashkan) of Gagauzia and the mechanism of interaction between the Central Election Commission of Moldova and the local Election Commission. The proposed amendments eliminate these shortcomings,” said the authors of the bill.
