The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) issued a statement, saying it categorically opposes the amendment of Article 13 of the Constitution with the aim of replacing the phrase “Moldovan language” with “Romanian language”, IPN reports.

According to the PSRM, the Constitutional Court’s judgment of October 31 concerning the amendment of Article 13 of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova is an attack on the statehood and identity of the people. The grandparents and great-grandparents called in time their mother tongue Moldovan and now the Moldovan language is native for most of the country’s citizen. The PSRM makes reference public opinion polls and the population census.

“Renouncing the name “Moldovan language” means betraying the memory of our ancestors. Only the mankurts who forgot about kinship acted so. The Party of Socialists considers it is inadmissible for the citizens of another state, like the judges of the Constitutional Court, who swore to be faithful to another state, to take fundamental decisions for the Moldovan statehood and the whole Moldovan nation. The PSRM considers the Constitutional Court’s actions are illegal and violate the principles of democracy that undermine national sovereignty. Such a decision can be taken only by the people at a national referendum,” says the statement.

This also says that the Constitutional Court in the recent past has openly fulfilled orders of the ruling alliance and opposed the people’s will. “For us, our language was and will be Moldovan. We will defend the rights of Moldovans to call their language Moldovan and will hamper the exclusion of “Moldovan language” from the fundamental law of our state by any ways in Parliament. The Republic of Moldova is our motherland. Moldovan is our language,” reads the party’s statement.

The Constitutional Court on October 31 pronounced on the bill to amend Article 13 of the Constitution, by which the phrase “Moldovan language” is replaced with “Romanian language” following a request made by a group of MPs. The Court approved of the bill.
