The Party of Socialists (PSRM) expressed its concern about the arrest of political persons and civic activists in the Transnistrian region. These include Oleg Horjan, a member of the local legislative body, and several friends of his.
In a public letter to the Transnistrian administration, the PSRM says Oleg Horjan is known as a real patriot who shows respect for the historical past and is a supporter of the Moldovan identity, Eurasian integration and the relations of friendship with the Russian Federation. He is also a convinced opponent of unionism and the entry into un NATO.
“The Party of Socialists vehemently condemns any expressions of violence, especially towards employees of the law enforcement agencies. We are convinced that each person should be able to freely express the political position and to mount peaceful protests,” says the letter. The party urges to change the preventive measure and to set free the arrested persons.
On June 6, Oleg Horjan was stripped of immunity and arrested. He is held in the remand detention prison in Tiraspol. He is accused of staging an unauthorized protest against the Transnistrian administration on June 2. After the protest, seven persons, among whom the deputy’s son, were detained and given 5 to 15 days of arrest for illegally mounting the demonstration.
On June 5, before the arrest, Oleg Horjan told a news conference in Chisinau that the authorities in Transnistria started to clean up the political landscape, violating the citizens’ right to freedom of expression.
