About 40% of the candidates of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) for the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019 will be women, while 30% will be representatives of other ethnic groups than the Moldovan one. The young candidates will also be included in the list in a high number, President Igor Dodon, who is the informal leader of the PSRM, stated after the meeting of the National Council of the Party of Socialists held on December 11, IPN reports.

Igor Dodon said after January 20 he will decide whether to become involved in the election campaign or not alongside the PSRM. On December 26, the National Council of the PSRM will have a new meeting and will approve the list and the electoral platform of the party there. “If I decide to take part in the upcoming elections, I will run as the top candidate on the PSRM’s list. I will take the decision by January 20, which is the time limit for taking such a decision,” stated the President.

As regards the referendum that will be held simultaneously with the parliamentary elections, the Party of Socialists will not campaign for or against the proposed issues: reduction in the number of MPs and recalling of MPs who do not fulfil their duties.

The president of the PSRM Zinaida Grecheanyi said they adopted a statement in support of the President of the Republic of Moldova and his initiatives. In the December 11 meeting, the party’s executive was entrusted with the task of forming the national staff for the elections and the list of candidates that are to be approved on December 26, including the list for single-member constituencies. “We held the so-called primaries to elect the future local candidates, but these are to be approved by the National Council,” stated the politician.
